Is Rwanda Safe To Visit?

How to stay safe in Rwanda

Before embarking on your Rwanda safari, a common question arises: Is Rwanda safe to visit? The answer is a resounding yes. Since the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has made significant strides in stability and safety. Democratic elections have been successfully conducted, rendering Rwanda one of Africa’s most stable nations. Traveling within the country is straightforward, safe, and relatively easy. Bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Rwanda offers travelers secure and serene experiences.

Is Rwanda safe to visit: Travel Tips from our Experts

Health

All travelers to Rwanda must possess a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival. Malaria is prevalent throughout the country year-round. Although much of Rwanda’s terrain is situated at higher elevations where malaria transmission is less common, it is still advisable to take prophylactic medication and seek medical advice prior to your trip. Hospitals are accessible in major towns, ensuring medical assistance if needed.

It’s essential to refrain from drinking tap water and instead opt for bottled mineral water, widely available in urban areas.

Warning: Gorillas are highly susceptible to human diseases. If you have a contagious illness, particularly flu, it is imperative not to participate in gorilla trekking activities.

Trekking

Gorilla trekking involves strenuous hikes lasting one to four hours each way, traversing thick forests and steep mountains at elevations up to 3,000 meters. Participants must be in good health, physically fit, and adequately equipped for the challenging conditions.

Please note that children under 15 years old are not permitted to partake in Rwanda’s gorilla trekking excursions.

Insurance

We strongly recommend comprehensive insurance coverage for yourself and your belongings throughout your stay and for any travel involving light aircraft. Adequate insurance should also be arranged to cover the unforeseen cancellation of your safari.
