Gombe Stream National Park

A Sanctuary for Chimpanzees and Conservation

Gombe Stream National Park, located in western Tanzania along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, is a small but significant national park renowned for its pioneering chimpanzee research and stunning natural beauty. Spanning just only 35 square kilometers square on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe Stream is Tanzania’s smallest national park, but its global fame stems from the ground breaking work of Dr. Jane Goodall, who began her chimpanzee research here in 1960.

Geography and Terrain

The park’s terrain is characterized by steep valleys, forested hills, and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Gombe’s landscape includes:

  • Tropical rainforests
  • Riverine forests
  • Open woodlands
  • Bamboo forests

This diverse habitat supports a rich variety of plant and animal life, creating a lush and vibrant environment for wildlife observation.

The park continues to be a center for scientific research and conservation efforts aimed at protecting chimpanzees and their habitats.

Best Time to Visit Gombe Stream

The best time to visit Gombe Stream National Park is from June to September, during the dry season.  Trekking through the forest is easier at this time of year, and the likelihood of seeing the chimps increases.

Gombe has one continuous wet season from November to April, and we advise you to avoid this time, as nature walks are less enjoyable in the mud and rain and likely lead to cancellation.

Visitor Experience

Gombe Stream National Park offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors interested in wildlife, conservation, and natural beauty. The park’s remote location and limited infrastructure provide a sense of seclusion and tranquility, allowing for a more intimate connection with nature. Accommodation options are limited but include basic campsites and a few lodges that offer comfortable amenities. Whether trekking through the forest to observe chimpanzees, hiking to scenic viewpoints, or enjoying the serene shores of Lake Tanganyika, visitors to Gombe Stream National Park are treated to an unforgettable adventure in one of Tanzania’s most iconic natural areas.
