Greytoke Mahale Camp, located in a remote position on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Mahale Mountains National Park, with densely wooded 8000-foot peaks above, Greystoke Mahale is a camp with a traditional feel and a rare feeling of romance. This region hosts the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees.
Greystoke Mahale Camp is one of the best places in the world to observe these primates. Tracking them is the flagship activity at camp. Guests can reach them in a 20-minute walk or even a three-hour hike. This depends, however, on how deep in the forest the chimpanzees have settled. Alternatively, guests can sail on a dhow across the rippling waters of Lake Tanganyika.
Accommodations at Greystoke Mahale Camp consist of six A-frame bandas spaced along the water’s edge. Built from thatch and reclaimed dhow wood, each of the open-fronted rooms is nestled within the tree line. The rooms at Greystoke Mahale are almost invisible to the passing fishermen in their small canoes. Furthermore, a dressing area leads to an ensuite bathroom with running water and a flush loo. The rich foliage that gives the camp such character can be enjoyed while you are showering in privacy. The rooms all have verandas. In addition, there is an upstairs chill-out lounge with views across the white sand to the vastness of Lake Tanganyika.
Moreover, indulge in a variety of sumptuous dishes. You can also enjoy private dinners by candlelight on the beach with the gently crashing waves providing an intimate ambiance.
