Mgahinga National Park

Uganda's Volcanic Sanctuary

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, situated in the southwestern corner of Uganda, is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area that spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering just 33.7 square kilometers, it is Uganda’s smallest national park but plays a crucial role in the conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is known for its stunning volcanic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural significance.

Geography and Terrain

Mgahinga’s terrain is dominated by three inactive volcanic mountains, which are part of the Virunga Range:

  • Mount Muhabura: The tallest of the three peaks within the park, standing at 4,127 meters. It offers challenging hikes with breathtaking panoramic views.
  • Mount Gahinga: The smallest volcano, at 3,474 meters, known for its giant lobelia plants and the swamp-filled crater at its summit.
  • Mount Sabyinyo: Known as “Old Man’s Teeth” due to its jagged peaks, it reaches 3,669 meters and marks the intersection of the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Wildlife

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is renowned for its diverse wildlife, particularly its population of mountain gorillas. Notable wildlife includes:

  • Mountain Gorillas: The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla group, which is known for its tendency to roam across international borders. Gorilla trekking is a key attraction, offering visitors a chance to observe these majestic primates in their natural habitat.
  • Golden Monkeys: The park is one of the few places in the world where the endangered golden monkeys can be found. These vibrant primates are a highlight for many visitors.
  • Birds: With over 180 bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco and the Kivu ground thrush, the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
  • Other Mammals: The park also hosts other mammals like buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, and various small mammals.
