Discover Iconic Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park, located in the remote northeastern corner of Uganda, close by the borders of South Sudan and Kenya. Kidepo is an enthralling place of semi-arid savanna, seasonal rivers and low mountains. It is beautiful – and accessible – at any time of year. Kidepo valley is renowned for its rugged wilderness, stunning landscapes, and abundant wildlife. Covering an area of approximately 1,442 square kilometers, Kidepo is considered one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas. It is celebrated for its pristine beauty and unique cultural experiences.

Geography and Terrain

The park’s geography is characterized by vast plains, rugged mountains, and deep valleys, offering a diverse range of habitats:

  • Kidepo Valley: A wide valley floor surrounded by rugged hills and mountains, providing a picturesque backdrop for wildlife viewing.
  • Mount Morungole: A prominent mountain in the southern part of the park, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Narus Valley: A verdant valley with permanent water sources, attracting a variety of wildlife year-round.

Wildlife in Kidepo Valley

Kidepo Valley National Park is the third largest in Uganda, surpassed only by Queen Elizabeth National Park in terms of biodiversity.

This stunning park is home to 77 species of mammals, providing excellent opportunities for game viewing. Among the wildlife, 20 predator species can be found, including the lion, leopard, and spotted hyena.

Unique to Kidepo in Uganda are the black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, cheetah, and caracal. The elephant population has grown to over 650, a significant increase from 200 in the mid-1990s. Buffalo numbers are estimated to exceed 10,000, and there are more than 50 Rothschild’s giraffes, which represent an internationally significant population.

Zebras can be seen grazing on the expansive plains, while both greater and lesser kudu wander through the dense bush. Adventurous visitors might even catch a glimpse of the elusive white-eared kob, typically found in South Sudan and Ethiopia.

The park boasts a remarkable bird list of 470 species, with 60 of these not recorded in any other national park in Uganda. Kidepo is home to East Africa’s population of Clapperton’s francolin and the rose-ringed parakeet. Additionally, there are 56 species of raptors, and the park’s vultures are thriving. Kidepo is also the sole location in Uganda where birdwatchers can marvel at the grandeur of the Common Ostrich.

When to Visit Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo is accessible all year round. However, its general climate does differ from the rest of Uganda. While June used to be a dry month, it is now accepted that a long rainy season will run from April to the end of November. This is not an eight-month deluge, but you can expect some rain most days.

The dry season runs from December to March. The temperatures soar during this time, often reaching 40 degrees Celsius. The middle and end of the dry season (November to February) offers higher chances of wildlife sightings since the park’s sandy soils cannot hold water, and it becomes arid.

During these months, the reduced availability of water sources causes animals to congregate around reliable water holes, increasing the chances of sightings. This is also the best chance to see cheetah hunting on the short grass plains.

In contrast, animals are more difficult to locate during the wet season (April to August) since they leave the valleys for higher ground, where sightings are lower.

Conservation and Sustainability

Kidepo Valley National Park plays a crucial role in conserving Uganda’s biodiversity and supporting local communities. Conservation efforts include:

  • Wildlife Protection: Anti-poaching patrols and monitoring programs to protect endangered species, particularly lions and elephants.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborating with the local Karamojong community to promote conservation awareness and sustainable livelihoods through eco-tourism initiatives.
  • Research and Monitoring: Conducting scientific research to study and preserve the park’s ecosystems and wildlife populations.
