Start your 15-day Kenya Bush Adventure with a scenic five-hour drive to the Northern Kenya in Samburu National Reserve, where you’ll be staying for next 2-nights at Ashnil Samburu Camp.

The road to north from Nairobi crossing the equator and descending into increasingly arid, sun-baked terrain that signals the beginning of Kenya’s northern frontier. Samburu’s rugged, semi-desert landscape (home to rare species found nowhere else in Kenya) feels like a different country entirely by the time you arrive at Samburu National Reserve.

Samburu National Reserve is an excellent destination for the first part of your safari journey. Its dry, semidesert and savannah landscape offers sweeping views and abundant wildlife. The reserve is home to the Northern Five, also known as the Samburu Special Fivefive rare species that are uniquely found together in this region. The central Ewaso Nyiro River serves as an ideal vantage point for spotting these animals. Just beyond the park‘s boundaries, you can also encounter the captivating Samburu tribe and gain insight into their distinctive way of life.

Drive from Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The next leg of your 15-day Kenya Bush Adventure takes you on a picturesque 4-hour journey from Samburu National Reserve to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. With a memorable crossing of the equator along the way and views of Mount Kenya in the distance. You typically arrive in time for lunch at Sweetwaters Serena Camp, followed by an afternoon game drive where you may spot your first Rhino.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a protected area set up for endangered species. For Rhino lovers, this is a pure heaven on earth with a population of more than 100 black rhinos, almost 40 southern white rhinos and the last two remaining northern white rhinos worldwide. These white Rhinos can even be visited up close! Besides Rhinos, the conservancy hosts endangered species like the African wild dog, the oryx, Jackson’s hartebeest and Grévy’s zebra, and houses a sanctuary for abused or orphaned Chimpanzees.

Drive from Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park

A 4-hour descent through Rift Valley farmlands leads to the alkaline shores of Lake Nakuru National Park, where the water shimmers pink on good days and rhinos graze along the lakeshore. It’s a transfer that does nothing to temper expectations and everything to exceed them.

Lake Nakuru National Park is an amazing wildlife haven, smack in the middle of the Great Rift Valley. The Nakuru Lake in the middle of the park is its main attraction, with hundreds of birds flocking to its shores. The park used to be known for its many flamingos, but rising water levels caused these birds to migrate elsewhere. Luckily, they are slowly returning, and in any case, Lake Nakuru is a great place to visit with its black and white rhinos, giraffes, buffalos, lions, the occasional leopard and over 400 species of birds.

Drive from Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

The next two days of your 15-Days Kenya Bush Adventure are devoted to exploring the Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations and home to the legendary Great Wildebeest Migration.

During your morning and evening Kenya game drives, witness the Big Five lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino in their natural splendor. Lions roam confidently across the open plains, leopards lounge in tree branches, and elephants wander gracefully in family groups.

If visiting between July and October, you’ll experience the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River, braving crocodile-infested waters. This extraordinary phenomenon is nature’s greatest show of survival and instinct.

Drive from Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha & Boat Ride to Crescent Island

This 5-hour drive northeast from the Mara climbs out of the savannah into the cooler highlands, passing through Narok town and flower farms before the glittering surface of Lake Naivasha comes into view.

Lake Naivasha is a stunning freshwater lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley, sitting 1,884 meters above sea level and covering 139 square kilometres. It’s home to hippos, diverse fish species, and over 400 bird species.

Your visit includes a boat ride on Lake Naivasha and a walking safari on Crescent Island.. You’ll pass between huge groups of hippos while seeing eagles and cormorants flying above you, and admiring giraffes on the shore. Furthermore, the safari on board a small motorized boat takes about 60 minutes and ends on the beautiful Crescent Island, where you’ll continue with a stunning walking safari between zebras, giraffes and wildebeests.

Your 15-Day Kenya Bush Adventure continues. Departing Amboseli with Kilimanjaro fading in the rearview mirror, this 3.5-hour drive northwest cuts through open Maasai plains and dry acacia scrubland before the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Tsavo West National Park begin to take shape on the horizon.

Tsavo West National Park is a park that shows a diverse and remarkable nature with, for example, the Mzima Springs, the Shetani Lava Flows and the Chaimu crater. With its 9,065 square kilometres, this is one of Kenya’s largest national parks, and four of the Big Five can be seen roaming freely here. Besides, you fairly easily spot regulars like giraffes, zebras, antelopes, gerenuks and many different species of birds, all between the green hills, acacia forests, savannah, natural springs and huge lava rocks from nearby volcanos.

Just 3 hours separate Tsavo West’s volcanic wilderness from the quietly spectacular Taita Hills, as the road climbs gently into a landscape of ancient forests and sweeping savannah views.

The Taita Hills Wildlife Conservancy, named after the surrounding hills, is a vital component of the Eastern Arc forests, which are recognized as a biodiversity hotspot. Spanning 28,000 acres, the conservancy features a diverse range of habitats, including riverine forests, savanna woodlands, and grasslands.

The vegetation is typically dense and layered, predominantly consisting of Acacia and Commiphora trees, and appears evergreen in the wetter regions, particularly in the central lowlands of the sanctuary. This sanctuary lies adjacent to the Southern Tsavo West National Park and serves as a crucial dispersal area and migratory corridor for wildlife between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, enhancing its value as a recreational tourism destination and its ecological significance.

The mountainous terrain provides stunning views of Kilimanjaro, Pare, and Uluguru mountains, as well as the Taita Hills, with a seasonal river that divides the sanctuary into valleys and lowland plains.

The drive from Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary  to Tsavo East National Park takes a little under 3 hours. The route moves from the cooler, greener hills into open plains, where the land gradually flattens and acacia trees start to dominate the horizon. By the time you enter Tsavo East, the landscape feels wider and drier, with classic savannah scenery and the first signs of its large wildlife herds.

Tsavo East National Park spans an impressive 13,000 square kilometers, making it one of Africa‘s largest and most captivating protected areas. Established in 1948, it’s steeped in history and natural grandeur.

Futhermore, explore the sprawling savannah of the Yatta Plateau, home to majestic herds of iconic red elephants. Here, you’ll also have the chance to encounter some of Africa‘s rare supertuskers and the distinctive maneless lions. Immerse yourself in the legendary tales of the man-eating lions as you take in the park’s rich diversity of wildlife. On the final day of your 15-Day Kenya Bush Adventure, it’s time to drive back to Nairobi to catch your flight back home from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Sad to leave…? Then don’t worry! We can easily add a few days on one of Kenya’s stunning beaches along the coast!
