Best Things to Do in the Masai Mara National Reserve

Things to Do in the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is an oasis of varying landscapes, plenty of game, and a rich cultural history. The Masai Mara is in the southwest of Kenya and shares a border with the equally famous Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, where millions of wildebeest and zebra make their way across the Mara River during the famous Wildebeest Migration each year. Here are some of the best things to do in this amazing place.

1. Experience the Masai Mara on Game Drive

Masai Mara National Reserve

Game drives conducted in safari vehicles serve as the primary means for ticking off numerous wildlife sightings from your list. The Masai Mara National Reserve is celebrated as one of the premier wildlife destinations globally, and this reputation is well-deserved. It presents an array of wildlife, ranging from majestic big cats to the iconic Big Five; with a stroke of luck, one might even encounter a rhino within the Mara Triangle, alongside an impressive diversity of over 450 bird species. Furthermore, the region is home to a significant population of large game, featuring remarkable numbers of giraffes, buffaloes, and elephants.

2. Night Game Drive

Night safaris, as the term implies, occur after dusk and offer a distinctly different experience compared to daytime game drives. In the stillness of the night, one’s senses heighten, allowing for a heightened awareness of every sound in the environment. The silhouettes and movements of nocturnal animals emerge and disappear swiftly, evading the attention of intrigued safari enthusiasts and any nearby predators. The thrill of being in the wilderness during these hours is almost tangible.

3. Hot Air Balloon Safaris in the Masai Mara

Rise early, just before the break of dawn, and set off on a transformative hot air balloon safari that takes you soaring over the majestic Mara plains. Glide serenely through the sky while taking in the breathtaking aerial perspective of the wildlife beneath you, and if fortune smiles upon you, witness the spectacular Great Migration. This remarkable adventure culminates in a memorable and sumptuous champagne breakfast, served amidst the stunning landscape of the Mara.

4. Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration

Mara River

The Great Migration stands as one of the most remarkable phenomena in the natural world, characterized by the yearly journey of two million herbivores traversing the Serengeti/Mara ecosystem. While the vast herds of grunting wildebeests are present throughout the year, the iconic and thrilling crossings of the Mara River, occurring from July to October, are an essential experience for any wildlife aficionado’s list of must-see events.

5. Horseback Safaris

For individuals seeking unique experiences beyond conventional tourism, embarking on a horseback safari ranks among the premier activities to consider in the Masai Mara. Visiting the Masai Mara National Reserve during the Wildebeest Migration presents an extraordinary chance to ride alongside the herds of zebras and wildebeests as they traverse from the Serengeti into the Mara, allowing you to observe the magnificent spectacle of the herds galloping forward from a safe vantage point by the riverside.

6. Nature Walks in the Masai Mara

Kenya Family holiday

Embark on a remarkable journey that rekindles your adventurous spirit by tracing the paths of ancient explorers and local herdsmen through a unique guided walking safari. Immerse yourself in the natural world, free from the noise of a safari vehicle, as you attune your senses to the sounds of crickets, inhale the crisp air, gaze upon the expansive horizon, and feel the rich African soil beneath your feet.

7.  Bird Watching in the Masai Mara

With between 470 and 500 different species of birds, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a birdwatcher’s dream come true. Interestingly, the Mara is a year-round destination for birdwatchers, so you’ll always see a lot of feathered companions. Nonetheless, the rainy season, which runs from late October to November, when migratory birds arrive from Northern Africa and Europe, is the best time of year for birdwatchers.

8. Camping & Photographic  Safaris

If you prefer camping in your spare time, the Masai Mara National Reserve is the place to go. Because you will be alone, the experience will be unique. Sleeping in the middle of the African bush with wild animals not far away is among the unique tourist activities available in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

Experience the admiration of the Mara while traveling in one of our advanced, fully-customized photographic safari vehicles. These vehicles feature unobstructed views, 360-degree swivel chairs, a well-stocked personal bar, and air conditioning, ensuring the pinnacle of photographic adventures. The wildlife enhances this experience, serving as captivating subjects for your photography.

9. Maasai Cultural Encounter

A visit to the Masai Mara National Reserve is not truly fulfilled without engaging in a genuine cultural experience that allows for an intimate connection with the intriguing Maasai community. The Maasai will welcome you into their simple manyattas, constructed from mud and sticks, offering insight into their pastoral lifestyle and the rich, age-old traditions that have been passed down through generations.

10. Bush Meals & Sun Downer

Should you choose to celebrate your honeymoon in the Masai Mara National Reserve, it is essential to experience the sundowners and bush breakfast or dinner. African Diurnal Safaris can provide a mobile dining service, complete with meals, beverages, and wines, set against the backdrop of the savanna. There is truly nothing more enchanting than enjoying a stunning sunset in the open air while embraced by your partner.

When Should I Visit the Masai Mara?

Masai Mara

The optimal time to explore the Masai Mara National Reserve is contingent upon the specific activities one wishes to engage in during the visit. It is important to note that many lodges in the Masai Mara typically shut down in March, marking the onset of the low season. Conversely, the peak travel season in the Masai Mara spans from approximately June to October; however, numerous activities remain available outside this timeframe for those who prefer to avoid the crowds.

What is the difference between Masai and Maasai?

If you have been exploring information regarding the Masai Mara, you might have come across two distinct spellings. The term ‘Maasai,’ featuring a double ‘a,’ pertains to the ethnic group and its members, with the name translating to ‘people who communicate in the Maa language.’ Conversely, ‘Masai,’ which is spelled with a single ‘a,’ is utilized to denote the wildlife-abundant area located in Kenya.

Conclusion: The Best Things to Do in the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is a destination that inspires deep admiration and fascination. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the beauty of nature, immerse oneself in genuine cultural experiences, and engage in exhilarating adventures. This remarkable location is one that will remain etched in your memory, compelling you to return time and again. Should you be considering a trip to the Masai Mara, do not hesitate to contact our safari specialists at African Diurnal Safaris, who can customize a safari experience for you, ensuring that your itinerary encompasses a variety of exciting activities.

Amazing Safari An amazing experience in Kenya on safari. African Diurnal were great from the beginning booking to the end of the trip. They offered fantastic payment and cancellation terms that really made us feel comfortable. They were very clear with their communications beforehand and had everything prepared for our arrival in Kenya. Their driver (Robert) was truly fantastic, with local knowledge and a calmness that put us at ease straight away. His wildlife knowledge enabled us to have really close encounters with all of the big five! We also witnessed a cheetah and lion double kill on our last game drive! Amazing! Would highly recommend this company for an East African safari experience!

Very knowledgeable about wildlife and a perfect and safe driver who pays respect to wildlife 🐆 Lameck is the owner of this wonderful safari agency. He is born and raised a little outside Serengeti and knows tremendous much about the wildlife in Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. He speaks perfectly English and during our shared dinner, we have talked about nature, politics, culture, religion, history - we have learned so much! Very importantly he is an experienced and safe driver who also takes care of the animals e.g. waiting for animals to cross roads in contrast to many other drivers we saw on our way. We experienced a flat tire on night - but no problem! Lameck could fix it right away 🙌 We are so happy, that we consider to hire the company next year for a safari in Uganda and/or Kenya 🦒

Amazing 7 day safari experiences in Northern Tanzania Unforgettable safari experience with African Diurnal Safaris . I and my husband went on a 7-days safari adventure covering Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara national park and had the most spectacular experience. The guide Lameck goes above and beyond to give us an unforgettable safari. With Lameck’s help we managed to see all the big five’s and we had incredible experiences seeing both lions and Leopard hunting prey. The selected accommodations (Tortilis Camps and Karatu Tented Lodge) was top norch and food were great throughout the whole safari trip. Would highly recommend anyone going for a safari with African Diurnal Safaris and choose Lameck to be your safari guide you won't regret.
