Mgahinga National Park

Uganda's Volcanic Sanctuary

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, situated in the southwestern corner of Uganda, is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area. This compact national park spans just 34 square kilometers. It contains an astonishing amount of biodiversity. It is Uganda’s smallest national park but plays a crucial role in the conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas. Towering volcanoes rise from dense forest, and open clearings offer views that stretch far beyond the Ugandan borders into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Geography and Terrain

The landscape of Mgahinga is characterized by three dormant volcanic peaks, which belong to the Virunga Range:

  • Mount Muhabura: The tallest of the three peaks within the park, standing at 4,127 meters. It offers challenging hikes with breathtaking panoramic views.
  • Mount Gahinga: The smallest volcano, at 3,474 meters, known for its giant lobelia plants and the swamp-filled crater at its summit.
  • Mount Sabyinyo: Known as “Old Man’s Teeth” due to its jagged peaks, it reaches 3,669 meters and marks the intersection of the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
