What to Consider when Planning your Safari Vacation in East Africa

Planning a safari vacation in East Africa, especially in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, is a dream for many, but it requires careful preparation. While it may seem easy to fly into these countries, rent a car, and explore independently, this is not advisable due to poorly defined roads. It is better to travel with someone who knows the area well.

Getting professional help is important for creating your safari itinerary and ensuring safe transport. However, you should also feel free to plan your trip according to your preferences, while valuing the advice of experts. Picking the right time and place is crucial for a successful safari.

To effectively plan your first Safari Vacation in East Africa, consider factors like seasonality, experiences in different regions, accommodation options, park fees, small aircraft, and how to make the most of your budget. If you are thinking about booking a safari, keep these key aspects in mind.

Start Planning in Advance

For many people going on their first safari or experienced travelers looking for a new place, there are usually one or two key things that attract them to the safari. This may be sparked by a documentary about lion populations in Ruaha National Park or cheetahs in the Eastern Serengeti, which becomes the main focus of their trip. With enough time, you can also discover what the surrounding areas and the country offer, enhancing your experience. If you don’t have a specific destination, exploring different safari options with careful research and planning can lead to a fulfilling adventure. Understanding what you want from the safari is just the start; adding activities related to adventure, culture, and wildlife can create a richer experience.

How to Plan your First Safari Vacation in Africa

The Timing of Events is Crucial

The timing of your safari can greatly influence your overall experience. Given the equatorial climate of East Africa, temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the year; however, there are distinct warmer and cooler seasons as well as varying regional climates. It is crucial to pay attention to rainfall patterns, as these significantly affect wildlife and birdwatching opportunities. If you have specific species in mind that you wish to observe, it is essential to consider these rainfall patterns, particularly in relation to migratory birds and the Great Wildebeest Migration. Additionally, it is advisable to plan your activities and experiences to coincide with optimal weather conditions. For instance, boating safaris in Nyerere National Park can cover a larger area when water levels are elevated following recent rains, whereas walking safaris and fly camping provide the most rewarding experiences during the drier months of the year.

Safari Vacation in East Africa – Low or High Season

There are significant distinctions between the low and high seasons that influence safari-related decision-making. The primary consideration is budget; safaris can be quite costly, particularly for families or groups. During the high season, demand increases, resulting in elevated accommodation prices that may be unaffordable for many. In contrast, the low season presents reduced costs, making luxury safaris more accessible. Another important factor is exclusivity; the high season often leads to congested conditions with numerous vehicles on game drives in well-known locations such as the Ngorongoro Crater and Masai Mara. In the low season, there are fewer visitors and vehicles, which facilitates a more intimate wildlife experience. Careful planning can enhance the opportunity for exclusivity in the parks of East Africa.

Accommodation Options

Having determined your desired destination, the sights you wish to experience, and the optimal time of year for your travels, it is now essential to turn your attention to accommodation. Alternatively, you may have begun your planning with a specific safari camp that caught your interest, and are now tailoring your itinerary around that choice. Regardless of your approach or budget considerations, it is crucial to recognize the significance of making reservations well in advance. After conducting thorough research on the most suitable lodging options, it can be quite disappointing to find that your preferred choice is no longer available. This is particularly true during peak travel seasons, when the demand for accommodations in popular areas consistently exceeds availability, especially in locations such as the Masai Mara and northern Serengeti from July to October.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Great Migration is a renowned phenomenon in East Africa, drawing numerous tourists to the Masai Mara and the Northern Serengeti annually. While the migration takes place throughout the year, the peak interest centers around the river crossings occurring from July to October, during which nearly 2 million wildebeest and zebras are observed. These crossings are particularly dramatic, as thousands of wildebeest risk their lives by leaping into the river, confronting the threat of hungry crocodiles. Prior to their southward journey in October, many animals graze in the Masai Mara, making early reservations for accommodation essential. Additionally, another remarkable aspect of this migration is the calving season of the wildebeest in the southern Serengeti, which occurs from January to March. During this time, herds congregate to give birth, creating breathtaking landscapes and showcasing the active predation of lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, thus providing a unique perspective on The Great Migration.

Amazing Safari An amazing experience in Kenya on safari. African Diurnal were great from the beginning booking to the end of the trip. They offered fantastic payment and cancellation terms that really made us feel comfortable. They were very clear with their communications beforehand and had everything prepared for our arrival in Kenya. Their driver (Robert) was truly fantastic, with local knowledge and a calmness that put us at ease straight away. His wildlife knowledge enabled us to have really close encounters with all of the big five! We also witnessed a cheetah and lion double kill on our last game drive! Amazing! Would highly recommend this company for an East African safari experience!

Very knowledgeable about wildlife and a perfect and safe driver who pays respect to wildlife 🐆 Lameck is the owner of this wonderful safari agency. He is born and raised a little outside Serengeti and knows tremendous much about the wildlife in Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. He speaks perfectly English and during our shared dinner, we have talked about nature, politics, culture, religion, history - we have learned so much! Very importantly he is an experienced and safe driver who also takes care of the animals e.g. waiting for animals to cross roads in contrast to many other drivers we saw on our way. We experienced a flat tire on night - but no problem! Lameck could fix it right away 🙌 We are so happy, that we consider to hire the company next year for a safari in Uganda and/or Kenya 🦒

Amazing 7 day safari experiences in Northern Tanzania Unforgettable safari experience with African Diurnal Safaris . I and my husband went on a 7-days safari adventure covering Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara national park and had the most spectacular experience. The guide Lameck goes above and beyond to give us an unforgettable safari. With Lameck’s help we managed to see all the big five’s and we had incredible experiences seeing both lions and Leopard hunting prey. The selected accommodations (Tortilis Camps and Karatu Tented Lodge) was top norch and food were great throughout the whole safari trip. Would highly recommend anyone going for a safari with African Diurnal Safaris and choose Lameck to be your safari guide you won't regret.
