Drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate

Moshi – Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut

This day signifies the commencement of your adventure. Following breakfast at the hotel and a thorough equipment check, you will set off towards the gate to complete the necessary formalities before initiating your hike to the Mandara Hut. Accompanied by skilled mountain guides, chefs, and porters, you will traverse the rainforest to reach the Mandara encampment.

During your journey, a brief detour to Maundi Crater will provide you with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe Eucalyptus trees, a variety of bird species, and Colobus monkeys.

The hike is expected to last approximately 3 to 4 hours, covering a distance of 8 kilometers, with an elevation gain from 1860 meters (6100 feet) to 2700 meters (8875 feet).

Ascend Through the Alpine Meadow (12,000ft)

Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

On this day, you will make your way through the expansive moorland towards the Horombo hut, where you will begin to notice the effects of altitude changes.

The journey offers a chance to observe unique flora such as lobelias and groundsels, alongside breathtaking views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo.

You will be accompanied by experienced mountain guides, skilled chefs, and porters who will assist you throughout the trek.

The hike will take approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of 12 kilometers, as you ascend from an elevation of 2700 meters (8875 feet) to 3700 meters (12,200 feet).

Hike to Mawenzi Ridge / Zebra Rock

Acclimatization Day

This day is excluded if a 5-day itinerary is selected.

It is designated for climbers to enhance their likelihood of reaching the summit. As you progress on day 4 towards the mountain’s peak, it is essential to acclimatize to the changing climate. The trek will take you to the Zebra Rocks, after which you will return to the Horombo Hut for lunch.

This time will be spent relaxing and regaining strength in preparation for the upcoming adventure the following day. Accompanying you will be experienced mountain guides, chefs, and porters. The notable sights include the unique black and white striped Zebra Rocks.

The hike will last approximately 4 hours, covering a distance of 5 kilometers, with an elevation of 4020 meters at the Zebra Rocks and 3700 meters at the Horombo Hut.

Ascending to Kibo Hut (10 km)

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

On this day, right after breakfast, the group will be trekking to the Kibo Hut (4,720 m /15,482 f). The actual trekking is not very difficult, just remember to stick with an appropriate pace to preserve your strength for the climbing to Kilimanjaro’s summit. When you reach the camp you will be served lunch, after which we recommend you sleep as much as you can, avoid any strenuous activity, and drink lots of water.

Ascending to Uhuru peak (16km)

Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

This segment of the Marangu route is both thrilling and unforgettable, as it culminates in the achievement of the Kilimanjaro climbing certificate. Departing from Kibo hut at midnight, approximately 2 AM, climbers will embark on a challenging ascent to the summit, navigating steep, rugged scree and occasionally snow until they reach Gilman’s Point, situated on the crater’s edge. From this vantage point, the journey continues to Uhuru Peak, the pinnacle of Africa, where climbers will stand at the continent’s highest elevation, often referred to as the roof of Africa. Following this remarkable achievement, a brief descent will take you from Kibo to the Horombo encampment.

Time & Distance: 6 to 8hrs Ascending/hiking of 6km distance and 15km descending to Horombo

Equipment: Headlamps/flashlight, warm layers as it will be very cold before descending

Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft Down to 3700m/12,200ft

Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate - Moshi Town

After breakfast, you will continue descending, passing through the Mandara hut and descending to the Marangu gate, where you started the adventures. From there, you will find the office team waiting for you, and you will be picked up and driven back to Moshi.

End of the 6- days  Kilimanjaro Marangu route, get ready for the next day flight back home.
