8 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

On this day, one of our representatives will meet you at either Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and transport you to the hotel in Moshi, where you will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in preparation for your ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro the following day.

After breakfast drive to Londorossi park gate (2250m/7380ft, 2.5 hours). From here a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades (2390m/7380ft, 11km, and 45minutes) and a possible campsite (park fees are not paid to camp here). Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (Big tree) campsite for overnight.

Several streams are crossed then it gains’ the Shira Ridge at about 3600m/1181ft and drops gently down to shira 1 camp located by a stream on the Shira plateau.  Arrive for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, a gentle walk across the plateau leads to shira 2 camp on moorland mean downs by a streams. A variety of walks are available on the Plateau making this an excellent acclimatization day. Arrive for dinner and overnight.

Proceeding from the Shira plateau, you head eastward, navigating past the junction that leads to the Kibo region. As you advance, your course shifts to the southeast, directing you towards the Lava Tower, known as the ‘Shark’s Tooth.’ Shortly after passing this tower, you arrive at the second junction, which leads you to the Arrow Glacier, situated at an elevation of 4876 meters or 15997 feet.

After breakfast, you leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley (4200m/13780ft). Arrive at campsite dinner and overnight.

Following breakfast, you depart from the Karanga Valley and proceed to the junction that links with the Mweka Trail. Your journey continues towards the Barafu Hut, situated at an elevation of 4600 meters (15092 feet). At this point, you have successfully completed the South Circuit, which provides various perspectives of the summit. Here, you will set up camp, take some time to rest, savor your dinner, and make preparations for the upcoming summit day. From this location, both peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo, are visible.

In the early morning, after enjoying a cup of tea or coffee, you will proceed towards the summit of Uhuru Peak, which stands at an elevation of 5,985 meters (19,636 feet). This segment of the ascent typically requires approximately six hours to complete. While nighttime temperatures at this altitude can be quite frigid, the weather tends to warm up significantly by the end of the hiking day. It is advisable to carry clothing suitable for both temperature extremes. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you will have attained the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in all of Africa. Those who hike at a faster pace may be fortunate enough to witness the sunrise from the summit. After taking in the breathtaking views, you will begin your descent directly to the Mweka Hut campsite, located at 3,100 meters (10,171 feet). This descent will take around five hours, and it is recommended to use gaiters and trekking poles to navigate the loose gravel. Later in the evening, you can savor your final dinner on the mountain and enjoy a well-deserved rest. It is worth noting that beer and soda may be available for purchase at Mweka Hut, the only location along this route.

After breakfast, you continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy; Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel with your group. It is time for celebration!
