Things to Do in Serengeti National Park

Things to Do in Serengeti National park

Nestled in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti National Park stands as one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Known for its vast plains, diverse wildlife, and the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras, the Serengeti offers an unparalleled experience for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or planning your first visit, this guide will provide you with everything you need to know. It will help you make the most of your trip.

Wy Visit Serengeti National Park

Visiting the Serengeti is like stepping into a nature documentary. The park spans over 14,763 square kilometers, making it one of the largest and most diverse ecosystems. Its rich biodiversity includes the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses—as well as countless other species of mammals, birds, and reptiles.

One of the park’s most celebrated events is the Great Migration. It is a natural spectacle where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse the plains in search of greener pastures. This incredible journey involves dramatic river crossings and numerous predator-prey interactions. It offers unmatched opportunities for wildlife photography and observation.

In addition to its wildlife, the Serengeti also boasts stunning landscapes ranging from endless savannahs to lush riverine forests and rocky outcrops known as kopjes. Whether you are exploring these terrains through a guided safari or on a self-drive adventure, the Serengeti promises an unforgettable experience.

Top Things to Do in Serengeti National Park

1. Witness The Great Migration

The Great Migration is arguably the most iconic event in the Serengeti. Observing this natural phenomenon is a must-do for visitors. The migration involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. They move in a circular route throughout the year. The migration can be seen from various points in the park, depending on the time of year. Therefore, it’s crucial to plan your visit accordingly to catch this awe-inspiring event.

2. Go on a Guided Game Drive

Game drives offer an intimate way to explore the Serengeti’s vast landscapes and observe its wildlife. Guided by experienced rangers, these drives can be taken at dawn, dusk, or even at night, providing different perspectives. You can see various species in their natural habitats. Whether it’s spotting a pride of lions lazing under a tree or a herd of elephants traversing the plains, game drives provide unforgettable experiences.

3. Take a Hot Air Balloon Over the Serengeti National Park

For a truly unique perspective of the Serengeti, consider a hot air balloon safari. As you float silently above the plains at sunrise, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the park’s landscapes and wildlife. This serene and exhilarating experience often concludes with a traditional champagne breakfast in the bush, adding a touch of luxury to your adventure.

4. Visit the Serengeti Visitor Center

The Serengeti Visitor Center, located near Seronera, offers insightful exhibits about the park’s history, wildlife, and conservation efforts. It’s an excellent place to learn more about the ecosystem and the challenges it faces. The center also provides maps and guides, making it a helpful stop for understanding the park’s layout and planning your activities.

5. Enjoy Bird Watching

With over 500 bird species recorded in the Serengeti, bird watching is a rewarding activity. From the colorful lilac-breasted roller to the striking secretary bird, the park’s avian diversity is impressive. Whether you are an avid birder or a casual observer, the variety of habitats ensures a rich bird-watching experience.

6. Explore the Grumeti and Mara River

The Grumeti River and Mara Rivers are crucial to the migration route and are known for their dramatic river crossings. Watching wildebeest and other herbivores braving the crocodile-infested waters is a thrilling sight. The rivers also support a variety of other wildlife, including hippos and an array of bird species. Thus, they are a worthwhile stop during your visit.

7. Guided Nature Walk

You can see more of the park on a nature walk than you can in a regular game drive. Participants on these excursions act on the spur of the moment since there are no fixed routes. Because of this freedom, you are likely to find different reptiles, birds, insects, and unusual plants along the way. Most of the time, the walks are set up by nearby hotels. Each walk is led by a skilled armed ranger who knows the area and its different animals well.

8. Bush Meals and Sun Downer

Participating in sundowners and bush breakfast or dinner is vital if you celebrate your honeymoon in the Serengeti National Park. All meals, drinks and wines are served during the mobile dining experience offered by African Diurnal Safaris. The savanna serves as your backdrop. There’s a special feeling to enjoying a beautiful sunset outdoors with your loved one.

9. Serengeti Cultural Tour/ Masai Village Visit

One way to get to know the Masai tribe is by visiting their village. This is a unique opportunity to meet one of East Africa’s well-known communities. Experience their old traditions and customs. This will help you appreciate their way of life. While there, meet the local community, learn from their knowledge and experience, and listen to stories that have been passed down through generations. Watch how Maasai people joyfully share their dances, songs and ceremonies.

10. Night Game Drive

Have you ever considered what it’s like to hear wildlife sounds while the sun is down? A night game drive allows visitors to fully enjoy the special atmosphere here. Although you can’t do a night game drive in the park, several operators can arrange one in nearby reserves. A number of nocturnal animals such as civets, aardvarks, nightjars, and bush babies are found in the Serengeti and its private conservancies. Besides, these drives let people see zebras, hyenas, impalas, giraffes, jackals, and foxes where they naturally live. It is especially interesting that lions, hyenas, and leopards are most active at night. This means you can easily see them hunting.

When to Visit Serengeti National Park

The best time to visit Serengeti National Park largely depends on what you want to see. The dry season, from late June to October, is ideal for witnessing the Great Migration and offers excellent game viewing as animals gather around water sources.

The wet season, spanning November to May, brings lush landscapes and a burst of new life, with many animals giving birth. While wildlife is more dispersed, this period offers fewer crowds and opportunities to witness the park’s vibrant greenery.

For birdwatchers, the period from November to April is particularly rewarding. Migratory birds join the resident species, adding color and diversity to the park.

Amazing Safari An amazing experience in Kenya on safari. African Diurnal were great from the beginning booking to the end of the trip. They offered fantastic payment and cancellation terms that really made us feel comfortable. They were very clear with their communications beforehand and had everything prepared for our arrival in Kenya. Their driver (Robert) was truly fantastic, with local knowledge and a calmness that put us at ease straight away. His wildlife knowledge enabled us to have really close encounters with all of the big five! We also witnessed a cheetah and lion double kill on our last game drive! Amazing! Would highly recommend this company for an East African safari experience!

Very knowledgeable about wildlife and a perfect and safe driver who pays respect to wildlife 🐆 Lameck is the owner of this wonderful safari agency. He is born and raised a little outside Serengeti and knows tremendous much about the wildlife in Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. He speaks perfectly English and during our shared dinner, we have talked about nature, politics, culture, religion, history - we have learned so much! Very importantly he is an experienced and safe driver who also takes care of the animals e.g. waiting for animals to cross roads in contrast to many other drivers we saw on our way. We experienced a flat tire on night - but no problem! Lameck could fix it right away 🙌 We are so happy, that we consider to hire the company next year for a safari in Uganda and/or Kenya 🦒
