Mafia Island: A Hidden Gem of the Indian Ocean

Mafia Island

Tanzanias Mafia Island is an island paradise with amazing ocean and diving experiences. Travelers can immerse themselves in Mafias immaculate waters, white sand beaches, and coral reefs. This is perfect if they want to escape crowded tourist destinations and overdone resort accommodations. Mafia, Tanzania has nothing to do with Italian gangsters. You won’t find any mob bosses among the many schools of tropical fish or sea turtle nesting sites on the island.

The Swahili phrase Mahali pa Afya, which translates to the place of good health, is where the term Mafia originates. Furthermore, we firmly believe that visiting this tranquil island will only enhance ones health! Sea turtles, coral reefs, and massive, gentle whale sharks are just a few of the marine life that makes Mafia so appealing. Mafia Island Marine Park is committed to the conservation and preservation of this amazing marine area. It was the first location in Tanzania to be named a marine park.

Along with Mafia, there are three other, small islands that comprise the Mafia Archipelago: Jibondo, Juani and Chole. While they are smaller, each of these beautiful islands offers something unique and are worth visiting.

Mafia is still a nearly undiscovered paradise, but Zanzibar is a more popular tourist destination in Tanzania. Since many travel agencies are unaware of it, Mafias beaches are remote and full of marine life and wildlife. Due to its exclusive status, Mafia is more expensive to visit than Zanzibar.
Feeling like you have the whole island to yourself is the trade-off, though. Snorkeling and diving excursions, for example, may involve just you and your travel companion diving with whale sharks or exploring a coral reef. In some ways, Mafia has remained a very local island in the Indian Ocean.

The local residents of Mafia island are mostly fishermen and farmers. Farmers generally grow tropical fruits and rice, while some may cultivate trees for cashews or coconuts. Visitors to the island are certain to enjoy tropical treats grown right there, on the island.

Best Time to Visit Mafia Island

The best period to go to Mafia Island is during the dry season. This is from June to October when the weather is sunny, and the sea is calm. However, the island’s warm climate and year-round activities make it a great destination anytime.

Things to Do in Mafia Island

Mafia has plenty of marine and beach activities to keep travelers active and engaged.

Deep-sea fishing

Great barracudas, kingfish, enormous tuna (both yellowfin and dogtooth varieties), giant trevally (which can weigh up to 50 kg!), and dorado are all possible with deep-sea fishing, which is particularly popular in the area. A staggering 57 kg (125 lbs) was the largest fish ever caught in the Mafia region! When the renowned author of Sherlock Holmes stories, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, visited in 1950, he caught a huge dorado weighing 34 kg (75 lbs), which broke records for this kind of fish throughout Africa. To the best of our knowledge, this record is still in effect.

If youre interested in deep-sea fishing on Mafia, you should be aware that the fishing season lasts for more than eight months, covering most of the year from August to March. Every year, Kinasi Lodge, a member of the Game Fishing Association, hosts the Mafia Channel Tournament here on Mafia Island. You should also think about attending.

Bird Watching

Across the Mafia area, bird lovers have the opportunity to spy over 120 species of unique tropical birds. The forests in the northern area of Mafia offer the best chances to see birdlife, but, because everything is ‘extra’ in Tanzania and it’s islands – Mafia Island is one of the few places you can have an excellent bird-watching tour, from the waters of the Indian Ocean, seated in a traditional Tanzania dhow.

Wildlife Spotting

Mafia Island, nestled within the remarkable landscape of Tanzania, offers a chance to witness an array of fascinating African wildlife. On the island, visitors might encounter wild hippos thriving in the marshy central regions, along with other captivating creatures such as playful vervet monkeys and freely roaming genet cats. Chole Island, part of the Mafia archipelago, is particularly renowned for its population of giant fruit bats. These gentle, tropical bats are entirely herbivorous, feeding exclusively on fruit.

Diving

Mafia Island and the surrounding smaller islands offer incredible diving experiences. In fact, Mafia Island is renowned in East Africa for its natural, vibrant reefs and amazing variety of tropical fish.

Exploring the underwater world around Mafia Island offers an incredible opportunity to encounter over 50 varieties of unique coral and nearly 500 species of fish. In its crystal-clear, warm waters, divers can witness schools of vivid orange and neon-yellow fish, catch sight of seahorses, and admire natural coral formations that resemble intricate sculptures or submerged works of art. The coral reefs surrounding Mafia Island boast some of the richest marine biodiversity along the East African coast. Additionally, marine mammals like humpback whales, sperm whales, and dolphins are also among the magnificent creatures that divers or snorkelers might come across in these waters.

The popular diving locations in the area include Forbes Bay and Dindini North Wall. Diving enthusiasts should consider visiting Mafia Island in the months of December – March for the best diving experiences, although diving opportunities are available year-round.

Snorkeling

There are many wonderful locations to snorkel and take in Mafias colorful reefs and variety of tropical fish species if you’re not a trained diver. For guests who are not proficient swimmers, some of these are located in calm, shallow waters.

Visiting Kilindoni Town

Mafia Island’s Kilindoni Town offers a few amenities, such as a bank and post office. It also hosts a local market, for items such as fresh produce and fish or seafood.

Just a 30-minute drive from Kilondoni lies Kisimani, located on the southwestern edge of the island. Once a flourishing hub with an impressive palace, the area is now marked by ruins that hint at its former glory. Artifacts uncovered here have been traced back to as early as 600 B.C., showcasing the long history of the site. According to legend, the ruler at the time ordered the hands of the masons and builders to be severed, ensuring that his palace could never be replicated elsewhere. This act, some say, might have led to Kisimani‘s eventual decline.

Accommodations in Mafia Island

Mafia Island, like Pemba and Zanzibar, boasts a wide range of accommodation choices. To make your selection easier, we highlight our top recommendations from two distinct categories. For a midrange option, we suggest the Mafia Kivulini Lodge.

This charming and rustic lodge provides all the essential comforts for an ideal beach getaway at an affordable rate.
